The largest palace, Topkapi, includes various architectural styles. People love sightseeing in this city and one day is not enough to see everything what Istanbul has to offer. With its rich history, Istanbul offers plenty of tourist places that attract visitors from many different countries. ![]() Istanbul (word means „the city“) was the common name in Turkish for this city even before the conquest in 1453. The beginning of Muslim rule started and Hagia Sophia was turned into a Muslim temple. In 15th century, Ottoman Empire took over the Constantinople and finished the Christian era of this city. Under Latin rule, the city was later ruined and plundered in the 13th century and Constantinople would never recover from this destruction. It was one of the wealthiest and most powerful cities in the world at the time and meeting point for East and West. In the history, it was known as Byzantium and later became the capital city of the Roman Empire, renamed to Constantinople. This city has changed the name many times. Hagia Sophia was for centuries the world´s largest cathedral, later it was turned into the mosque and now people can visit it as museum. The most famous structures of Istanbul, Hagia Sophia, is the result of Byzantine architecture. Nothing from the classical Greek architecture has survived, but Roman architecture has left here the Obelisk in the Hippodrome of Constantinople in Sultanahmet Square or section of the Valens Aqueduct in Fatih district. Istanbul is a historic center of Turkey with Byzantine and Ottoman architecture, but you can find here also signs of Genoese and Roman architecture. Istanbul is located in a transitional climatic zone, so it has three different climates. It is the only city in the world that sits on two continents. UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said that a letter had been received on Wednesday from the Turkish foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu addressed to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, requesting the use of “Türkiye” instead of “Turkey” for all affairs. The United Nations has changed the Republic of Turkey’s country name at the organisation from “Turkey” to “Türkiye”, following a request from Ankara for the change.
